I went along to visit one of YCAB's Rumah Berlajar (learning centres) this past week. The kids at these centres had dropped out of state schooling primarily due to lack of money and the need to help their parents make ends meet.

Each and every child enrolled at YCAB is vetted via a home check and among the parameters of 'means testing' is the verification of their family electricity bill. To gain acceptance (which I hope gives you a sense of how needy this cause is) the electricity bill must be less than Rp120,000 per month, that's US$13 per month (the price of 2 large cappuccinos, a raisin scone and one of those half chocolate caramel waffle things you buy from Starbucks). I'm not even sure what appliances you can run for Rp120,000 per month, but I'm certain it's not much. No fridge or AC and perhaps limited access to clean water. Makes me realise how fortunate I am.

Yours in Berlari Terus...
